Cooling Tower Meter
What is a Cooling Tower?
Buildings are cooled by extracting ‘heat’ through an HVAC system. The system releases this ‘heat’ into the condenser water system, eventually dissipating it into the atmosphere via the cooling tower, typically situated on the building’s rooftop. Inside the tower, condenser water is sprayed over a fill material. Simultaneously, fans propel air through the fill, causing a portion of the water to evaporate and, consequently, reducing the temperature of the remaining portion. While a cooling tower system incurs other water losses (drift and blow-down), approximately 80-85% of the make-up water is lost through evaporation.
What is a Cooling Tower Meter?
Your water bill may include a “sewer fee” to account for wastewater expenses. However, this fee assumes that all water purchased enters the sewer, which is not the case in buildings with cooling towers when water evaporates instead of entering the drain. A significant amount of water going into cooling towers never actually enters the municipal sewer system.
In order to obtain sewer allowance per evaporation you must install a DEP approved water meter on your cooling tower. This will allow you to measure the amount of water lost through evaporation, the meter must be DEP approved and installed in the correct location.
Ashokan has been installing cooling tower meters, understands the DEP guidelines, and can install the meters correctly the fine time reducing the time needed to obtain a cooling tower credit.
Each city has its own rules for allocating cooling tower credits, so it’s important to check with your local utility board.
