What is Backflow?

Backflow, the unwanted reversal of water flow, can dangerously contaminate your clean water supply. It occurs when clean and dirty water lines intersect, often triggered by pressure changes such as burst water mains. Contaminated water; containing sewage, pesticides, or potential dangerous chemicals; can infiltrate your drinking water; thus posing serious health risks.

Protect your water’s purity and safeguard your health by understanding backflow risks and taking preventive measures. Regular backflow testing and maintenance are essential to identify and address potential issues before they compromise your water quality. Prioritize backflow prevention to ensure safe, contaminant-free water for your health and peace of mind.

What happens if backflow occurs?

In case of backflow, you may notice a change in the color, taste, or smell of your water or you may have no sign. The result of the contamination may be as inoccus as rusty water but it can also kill you. Your first response should be to flush your system, and boil any water you drink. If the matter persists, contact your local municipality to test your water.

Is a backflow preventer required in NYC?

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) mandates the installation of backflow devices at the point of entry of your water service. These devices are referred to as Primary Backflow Devices and protect the public water supply from your contaminating it. Backflow devices are also mandated within your property to protect you from contaminating your own water supply. These devices are mandated by the Department of Buildings (DOB) in the Plumbing Code and called Secondary Backflow Devices. An example of a secondary device is a backflow device on an irrigation system to protect you from the pesticide, and a backflow device on a boiler feed to protect you from the boiler chemical treatment.
